Борьба англосаксов с завоевателями шла с переменным успехом. Особенно прославился в битвах со скандинавами Альфред Великий (Alfred the Great, 871 — 899), король Уэссекского королевства. Тем не менее, к 1016 г. Англия была завоевана скандинавами и во главе страны встал датский король Канут (Canute, 1016 — 1035).
